Mjollnir For Gobblers: Federal Premium’s Heavyweight TSS Turkey Shells
I may not be Thor, but I do believe I’m the man destined to wield this hammer…
Turkey hunting is a cussed sport; as perfect as it is when they come in like they’re being drawn in on a string, they do love to hang up just outside of shotgun range, don’t they? I don’t know about you, but more than once I’ve wished I had something like Thor’s hammer Mjollnir that could just reach out those 10 extra yards, and I think I’ve found it: Federal Premium just launched five new Heavyweight TSS turkey shotshell loads. Although Federal doesn’t advocate trying to reach out past the average 30 to 40-yard distance, previous loads in the Heavyweight TSS line have been reported to reliably pound gobblers at 50 and 60 (and further, although I personally wouldn’t try it).
The other thing I like about this line is that the blended loads–which combine either No. 7 and 9, or 8 and 10 Tungsten Super Shot–is that it’s made from dense, hard-hitting, but non-toxic tungsten. Although I’ll never look down my nose at hunters who use lead, I just enjoy that extra assurance when we’re talking about small, easily missed pellets in something I intend to eat. (Probably while singing Viking songs and quaffing mead.)
With some payloads topping 1,000 pellets, Federal says these new loads more than double the shot count of lead No. 5 loads of the same weight for more hits on target than any turkey load in history. The tungsten-alloy material’s 18 g/cc density is 22 percent higher than standard tungsten and 56 percent more than lead. The result is the most energy and highest velocities at extreme range. Its rear-braking FLITECONTROL FLEX wad performs flawlessly through ported and standard turkey chokes for the most consistent, deadly patterns possible.
The new loads are on dealer shelves now, and as I’m sure you can imagine when we’re talking about pricey materials and bleeding-edge technology, they’re not exactly cheap. But if I can reach out and touch a tom turkey like Thor unleashing his hammer, I’ve got my wallet out and my PIN handy. Here’s what they’ve got:
- 12 gauge 3 ½ inch, 2 ½ ounce 7/9, 1000 fps, 5-count / $63.95
- 12 gauge 3 ½ inch, 2 ½ ounce 8/10, 1000 fps, 5-count / $63.95
- 20 gauge 3 inch, 1 5/8 ounce 7/9, 1000 fps, 5-count / $46.95
- 20 gauge 3 inch, 1 5/8 ounce 8/10, 1000 fps, 5-count / $46.95
- 20 gauge 3 inch, 1 ½ ounce 9, 1100 fps, 5-count / $39.95
