According To Debbie Wasserman Schultz, “You do not have the right to bear bullets”.
In a move that seems far from likely to succeed, U.S. Representative Debbie Wasserman Schultz (FL-23) is introducing legislation that would require background checks for people who buy ammunition. This is a bill that only has 36 Democratic co-sponsors. No Republicans in the House support the bill.
There are some states that already have this type of legislation (Connecticut, Illinois, Massachusetts and New Jersey) and other states who are planning to require them soon (California and New York).
Wasserman Schultz apparently sees it as part of a much bigger plan –
In connection with other proposals to combat gun violence — such as banning assault weapons and making it harder for mentally ill people to get firearms — Wasserman Schultz said an ammunition-related background check would have a positive effect.
“Put together, woven together, it will provide the safety net that is essential to reduce gun violence. That’s our goal,” she said.
The proposed law does have language to accommodate ranges and camps –
Wasserman Schultz’s legislation wouldn’t require background checks for people who buy ammunition at shooting ranges or hunting camps and intend to use it at those locations.
Coming on the heels of former Supreme Court Justice Stevens calling for a repeal of the Second Amendment, these are not good optics for the left. If Democrats want us to believe that they don’t want to take away our guns, they aren’t doing a very good job convincing anyone of that.
Even local officials are revealing their true stripes –
R. Daryl Fisher, who is seeking the Democratic Party’s nomination in the upcoming primary election for Buncombe County sheriff, has come under criticism following his remarks at a monthly Moms Demand Action meeting for gun control earlier this month.
During his short speech, where he expressed support for banning high-capacity magazines and “any weapon that’s designed for use by the military,” he joked about taking away guns once people are dead.
“Don’t believe the scare tactics, because you’ve heard people say, ‘You’ll have to pry my gun from my cold, dead hands,’” Fisher is heard saying in a video posted by his campaign at the 3:04 minute mark. “OK … Whenever you pass away, we’ll come get it,” he quipped.
For those interested in learning more about the proposed law entitled Ammunition Background Check Act of 2018, click here to see what co-sponsor U.S. Senator Richard Blumenthal (D-CT) has to say about it.
“Ammunition sales should be subject to the same legal requirements as firearm sales, and that includes instant background checks. The same laws that prevent dangerous individuals from purchasing firearms also prohibit them from amassing arsenals of ammunition, with one major loophole: there are no background checks for ammunition sales to enforce the law. Closing this ludicrous loophole is a common sense component of a comprehensive strategy to reduce gun violence,” said Blumenthal.
“This common-sense legislation simply enforces existing federal law, and will make it harder for criminals to amass hundreds of rounds of ammunition without so much as sharing their first name with a gun store clerk,” Wasserman Schultz said. “Closing this absurd loophole will not by itself stop the next mass shooting tragedy. But this popular approach must be part of our larger strategy for ending gun violence. Studies show it can help keep ‘bad guys with guns’ from perpetrating another mass slaughter like the one we witnessed at Marjory Stoneman Douglas High School in my Broward County community, or the thousands of other acts of gun violence that devastate communities across the country. It takes more than just a gun to take an innocent life. It also takes bullets. We need to do all we can to make sure neither of them ends up in the wrong hands.”
