Understanding 9mm +P Ammo

Ammunition Depot knows not all 9mm is created equal (even if people are)…

If you’re new to the world of ballistic self-defense, there are a few critical things you should know about how your ammunition works. The first thing to understand is that there are several basic kinds of ammunition. When you’re looking for self-defense ammunition, many people have the mistaken belief that 9mm ammunition with the +P label is ammunition with “more power.” That’s not correct; the +P means “more pressure,” and that’s not exactly the same thing. What’s more, it doesn’t necessarily mean that 9mm+P is any better at stopping a lethal attack than any other kind. Because Ammunition Depot knows that the best ammunition for self-defense depends on both the shooter and the gun, they’ve created some guidelines to keep in mind.

The ammunition industry has an organization known as SAAMI, which is the Sporting Arms and Ammunition Manufacturers’ Institute, that establishes guidelines for ammunition production. Most major ammunition manufacturers follow SAAMI guidelines to ensure that all the ammunition they manufacture will function safely in all guns. This is what allows 9mm ammunition manufactured in 2020 to work perfectly in a 9mm handgun made in 1990, or vice versa. This is part of how Ammunition Depot ensures that all of its ammunition is of the highest quality!

Can Your Handgun Handle 9mm +P Ammo?

When it comes to deciding if you should use +P 9mm ammunition in your handgun, the first step is to determine if your handgun is rated for it. This is generally discoverable by looking in the owner’s manual. The next consideration is if it is worth the increased wear on your handgun. If your pistol has a short barrel, the extra velocity generally provided with +P ammo can improve terminal performance and accuracy … but those itty-bitty pistols people use for concealed carry can be hard to control already, and the increase in pressure from +P will also increase felt recoil up to 10%!

Whichever you choose, Ammunition Depot has your back … all the time.

Not all pistols/revolvers will be stamped +P rated. I have seen a lot of revolvers stamped +P rated, but I have never seen a semi-auto pistol stamped that way. Check your owners manual, and when in doubt, don’t shoot +P…

If your pistol is rated for +P ammo it will be stamped on the barrel. For instance, it will be stamped 9mm +p. If it doesn’t say +p then don’t use +p in your gun. It’s that simple. +p ammo is what we might call a “hot” load.

So +P is more pressure. How do you create more pressure? Yes, more power! You need some science for this article. Think about a small balloon and big balloon, which one gives your a louder boom? In self defense, use whatever police use. Shot placement is important.

“Power” doesnt mean more powder…you can seat deeper, or crimp or both with e same load to increase pressure
