Proof: Gun Banners Melt in the Rain

So that’s where Pelosi went.

Maybe Bloomberg should have ponied up for some tents and umbrellas, a bouncy house …

Many Second Amendment supporters don’t know just how much of the opposition’s game is played on Astroturf. If you’ve been in the industry long enough, though, it becomes extremely clear. Every large anti-gun rally that you’ll see will open up with a couple dozen brand-new buses disgorging “protesters.” Someone stands outside the bus door and hands them signs as they exit, and tells them where to go to wave their signs. That’s because those “protesters” are day-labor employees. Most of them don’t have 9-to-5 jobs, or they’d be at those jobs and not available to protest. The news media shows up on cue, finds the densest spot in the crowd, and then carefully frames the images to make it look as if there are more people than there are. (That’s because, of course, the mainstream media will say whatever they’re told.)

The problem with paying people to protest things is this: You get what you pay for. Unless, of course, the people you’re paying to protest are the sort of people who figure the American taxpayer already owes them a living. In that case, they’re going to take your money and walk away the moment they get uncomfortable. Even the “true believers” at anti-gun protests don’t care enough to stay when it rains. That’s because people who are motivated solely by banning a given thing are never going to be as energetic or effective as those who actively enjoy doing a given thing.

The proof is evident every single time the anti-gunners set up a protest or rally. All you need to do to verify it for yourself is show up a little early and hang out a couple of blocks away. The most recent example happened in Colorado, and the National Shooting Sports Foundation has all the details.

COLORADO GUN CONTROL RALLY FIZZLES WHILE MAINSTREAM MEDIA FAWNS

By Larry Keane

What began as an over-hyped, week-long gun control rally to force Colorado Gov. Jared Polis to ban all guns in his state fizzled out after one day and a little rain.

It was a real-time demonstration of the current reality of a growing and diversified gun-owning community that cherishes the rights guaranteed in the Constitution to lawfully possess firearms.

Theย Here 4 The Kids Rallyย was supposed to force the governor to relent to their demands. Instead, all it took wasย a little rainย for the group to call it quits.

Numbers Donโ€™t Lie

Saira Rao co-founded Here 4 The Kids, a new gun control activist group created to push national gun control. They chose Coloradoโ€™s capital to make their first splash. Media hyped the gathering, describing it glowingly.

โ€œOn the first day of school vacation in Denver next month, thousands of White women plan to sit on the lawn of Coloradoโ€™s state Capitol to demand protection for the mental and physical health of Americaโ€™s children. The most committed say they will stay until Gov. Jared Polis (D) issues an executive order to ban guns and buy them back,โ€ the Washington Postย described.ย โ€œOrganizers are asking protesters to sit at Coloradoโ€™s Capitol for at least four days before replacements swap in.โ€

Rao and protest organizers hoped 25,000 people โ€“ย specifically White womenย โ€“ would journey and partake in the sit-in.

The reality? The Denver Postย estimatedย 2,000 people showed up on the first day. NBC News described the crowd as closer toย 1,500.ย The Colorado Sunย peggedย attendance between 500-800. Other local news reporters on the sceneย describedย the crowd as โ€œhundreds.โ€ After all the build-up, itย rainedย Monday afternoon and everyone left, with sporadic attendance the following days. Organizers compared their efforts to theย 1960s Civil Rights Movement.

โ€œWe were all a bit disappointed,โ€ Raoย toldย media, trying to sell momentum. โ€œWe will base it on what we have learned this past week, what worked and what didnโ€™t work, and we will keep going until we get the Second Amendment repealed.โ€

One attendeeย describedย more fizzle than flare, saying, โ€œI understand there was a very low turnout the second and third day. I didnโ€™t get the sense that there was a connection there.โ€

Gov. Polis offered to meet with representatives of the group but wasย rejectedย โ€“ demonstrating the groupโ€™s lack of seriousness in solving the problem of criminal firearm misuse.

Costly Demands

Here 4 The Kidsโ€™ goals were simple, if not impossible and unconstitutional. Theย demandsย called for Gov. Polis to sign an executive order โ€œdeclaring a 30-day state of emergency,โ€ suspend the sale of all firearms and order โ€œa total ban on all guns and a comprehensive, mandatory buyback program.โ€ The governor rightly never entertained the idea,ย statingย he โ€œwill not issue an unconstitutional order that will be struck down in court simply to make a public relations statement.โ€

Second Amendment proponent Missy Espinozaย critiquedย the plans.

โ€œWhat theyโ€™re asking for โ€” not only is it illegal because itโ€™s unconstitutional to ban firearms and to disregard the Second Amendment rights of the people of this country and of our state โ€” but also itโ€™s misguided in the way that theyโ€™re presenting it,โ€ Espinoza said.

Asked about the cost of a mandatory buyback scheme to Colorado taxpayers, sit-in participant Wolf Terry was optimistic, if not realistic.

โ€œI think a lot of people would be willing toโ€ฆ I would hope that a lot of people, reasonable people, responsible gun owners, if theyโ€™re faced with that would be willing to say, โ€˜No you donโ€™t need to buy my guns back from me, Iโ€™ll give them up, this is for the common good,โ€™โ€ Wolf predicted.

Fortunately, thereโ€™s a nearby example of an expensive taxpayer-funded mandatory buyback scheme that is failing in real-time. Canadian Prime Minister Justin Trudeauโ€™s scheme is more than two years in the making. Heโ€™s attempting to โ€œbuybackโ€ roughly 200,000 Modern Sporting Rifle (MSR)-styled firearms from Canadaโ€™sย estimated 20 million gun owners. After an initial estimate of $250 million, itโ€™s now costing taxpayers an estimated price tag closer toย $600 million, with some admitting the real cost could be closer toย $2.7 billion.

For comparison, Colorado has roughly 5.8 million people and law-abiding Coloradans purchased more than 230,000 firearms total during the first five months of 2023, according to NSSF-adjusted NICS data. One media reportย revealedย Colorado residents purchased more firearms per capita than most other states in 2022.

Know Your Audience

Here 4 The Kids announced they picked Colorado for their first protest because of politics โ€“ a Democratic governor and some federal races that recently painted the state more purple. But theย Second Amendment is colorblindย and large numbers of voting constituencies that have historically voted Blue have crossed the aisle specifically to vote for their gun rights.

In Denver, Anubis Heruย launchedย 1770 Armory and Gun Club, the Mile High Cityโ€™s first Black-owned gun club, so the thousands of new local African American gun owners felt welcomed and comfortable. Between 2020 and 2022, more than 1.83 million Coloradans of all backgrounds lawfully purchased firearms, in addition to 2023โ€™s total to date.

Despite the repeated demagoguery of the American gun owner by gun control activists and a fawning media usually lending a hand, it is clear which side has an enthusiasm thatโ€™s both deep and wide. Recently more thanย 22,000ย people from several states showed up in Richmond, Va., toย peacefully protestย gun control legislation being considered. Gun control groups and antigun talking heads loudly predicted wide-spread violence. Instead, there were no arrests and rally-goers left the city cleaner than they found it. Local mediaย reported,ย โ€œThousands flooded the surrounding streets of the Capitol Monday for a gun-rights rally, however, some locals in the area say the roads are the cleanest theyโ€™ve seen in quite some time.โ€ In addition, Axiosย reportedย more gun rights legislation passed state legislatures and was signed into law in 2023 than gun control measures.

As media continues to report on gun control activists and their efforts through rose-colored glasses, the real story is that millions of Americans support the Second Amendment, embrace their right to purchase, possess and practice with firearms and will reject politicians who threaten those rights.
