Best Gun Safe for What You Own

Best Gun Safe for What You Own: 7 Picks by the Numbers

Best gun safe choices run by job: a $399.99 biometric box by the bed, $829 for 24 rifles, and 12-gauge steel for a real collection.

Buying and safety note. Unload every long gun before it goes in a safe, and check your state’s storage law. Specs and prices come from each maker’s own product page, read in October 2026. Prices change, so check the maker before you buy. No link on this site earns us a commission.
Vaultek Essential Smart Station DSE5i
The Vaultek Essential Smart Station DSE5i is a low-profile biometric handgun safe designed for nightstands or RVs, featuring a high-resolution fingerprint scanner, Smart Sense keypad, auto-opening drawer that holds up to two full-size pistols, a front LED clock, interior lighting, and rear dual USB/USB-C charging ports. Built from 16-gauge steel with anti-pry and anti-theft features plus an included security cable, it provides quick, secure access while blending into everyday spaces. Image, courtesy of Vaultek

The best gun safe is the one sized for what you own and where it has to live, and the gun count in the model name is the least trustworthy number on it. A gun safe is a steel box with a rated lock, built to keep kids, thieves and fire away from your guns. Three numbers tell you how well it does that: steel gauge, burglary label and fire rating.

Unload every long gun before it goes in (check the chamber twice), and keep the pistol you sleep next to in a locked quick-access box, not a nightstand drawer. Storage laws vary by state, so where a loaded gun may sit with kids in the house is a question for your statute book. So let’s sort the safes by job.

Best Gun Safe Picks at a Glance

  • Bedside: a 16-gauge fingerprint box with a steel cable, $399.99.
  • Under $1,000: Liberty Centurion 24, 14-gauge steel, 40 minutes at 1,200°F, $829.
  • First real safe: 12-gauge steel and an hour of fire rating, $1,799 to $2,179.
  • Fire ratings: none of the five fire-rated safes below names the lab that ran the test.
  • Burglary label: UL’s RSC test is one technician, hand tools, five minutes.

Best Gun Safe Picks by Job

Having worked behind the counter for over 20 years, I get asked how many guns a safe holds long before anybody asks about the steel, and buying too small is the mistake I see most. So this table puts the steel and the fire rating right beside the gun count.

The best gun safe for each job, by the maker’s own numbers
Safe and job Long guns (maker count) Fire rating (who rated it) Body steel, burglary label Maker price
Vaultek Essential Smart Station DSE5i
Bedside; renters (cable, no bolts)
None; 2 handguns None claimed on the maker’s page 16 gauge (0.0598 in); no burglary label on the page $399.99
Vaultek ViSN RS200i
Apartment closet (wall or floor mount)
2 (same page’s chart says 3) Not fire rated (maker) 14 gauge (0.0747 in); no burglary label on the page $1,399.99
Liberty Centurion 24
Long guns under $1,000
24 40 min at 1,200°F; maker, no lab named 14 gauge (0.0747 in); California safety-device listing $829
Browning Yellowstone 40
First real safe
40 (10 on the door), plus 4 handguns 60 min at 1,400°F; maker, no lab named 12 gauge (Browning: 7/64 in); “UL Listed” $1,799
Liberty USA 48
Large, under $2,200
48 60 min at 1,200°F; “certified,” no lab named 12 gauge (Liberty: 0.105 in); “UL-listed safe body” $2,179
Rhino Kodiak KGXR7141W
Big collection
63 60 min at 1,400°F; maker, no lab named 12 gauge (0.1046 in); UL Certified RSC $3,178
Rhino Lightning LIX6033
Heaviest steel, longest fire rating
42 120 min at 1,400°F; maker, no lab named 10 gauge (0.1345 in); UL Certified RSC $4,868

Figures are from each maker’s product page, and makers count guns generously. “No lab named” means the page gives minutes and degrees but not who ran the test. Gauge inches are from a standard steel chart unless the maker gives its own. Liberty and Rhino quote delivery in weeks. Prices change, so check the maker before you buy.

For most rifle owners, the best gun safe for the money sits in the middle: 12-gauge walls, an hour of fire rating and room to grow, from $1,799 for the Browning. The Centurion 24 is where I would start a small collection ($829 buys a UL-listed lock and a fire rating), and the Rhino Lightning is for the collection worth more than the truck in the driveway.

What the Numbers Mean

Here is the cheat sheet I wish came taped inside every safe door.

Five gun safe numbers, decoded
The number What it means What I look for
Fire rating How long the inside stays under a set heat, usually 350°F, the line that protects paper. Every rated safe in my table uses the maker’s own number. An hour at 1,200°F or more, and a label inside the door naming who tested it.
Steel gauge Lower number, thicker steel: 16 gauge is 0.0598 inch, 14 is 0.0747, 12 is 0.1046, 11 is 0.1196, 10 is 0.1345, 7 is 0.1793. 12 gauge or thicker on a long-gun safe.
UL RSC UL 1037’s Residential Security Container test: one technician, hand tools and a small drill, five minutes to open the door or make a 4-inch hole. The words “UL RSC.” “UL Listed” alone can mean just the lock.
Lock rating Electronic safe locks are listed under UL 2058; Liberty says a UL Type 1 lock needs at least one million combinations. A UL-listed lock with its batteries outside the safe, and a backup key kept somewhere else.
Locking bolts California asks for at least three steel bolts 1/2 inch thick plus protected hinges. Liberty’s USA 48 uses six 1/4-inch bars; Browning’s Yellowstone, seven 1-inch round bolts. Bolts on both sides of the door. I care more about the steel they lock into than the count.

Each line’s source is linked in the sections below.

Gauge runs backward, so a lower number means thicker steel. On the standard steel gauge chart, 12 gauge is about 40 percent thicker than 14, and makers round the decimals their own way, so compare gauge to gauge. I steer rifle owners to 12 or thicker, because California’s standard starts there.

Bar chart of gun safe steel thickness in inches by gauge: 16 gauge 0.0598, 14 gauge 0.0747, 12 gauge 0.1046, 11 gauge 0.1196, 10 gauge 0.1345, 7 gauge 0.1793
Steel thickness by gauge, from 0.0598 inch at 16 gauge to 0.1793 inch at 7 gauge, so the gauge on a spec sheet turns into real steel. Image courtesy of Guns and Gadgets Daily.

Gun Safe Fire Rating: Who Ran the Test?

Here is what jumped out at me: five of the long-gun safes give fire minutes and degrees, and not one of the five names the lab that ran the test. (The sixth, the Vaultek, says flat out it is not fire rated.)

Bar chart of gun safe fire ratings in minutes as each maker states them: Rhino Lightning at 120; Browning Yellowstone, Liberty USA and Rhino Kodiak at 60 each; Liberty Centurion at 40
Maker fire ratings for the five rated long-gun safes, from 40 to 120 minutes, so you can see the spread before you read the label inside the door. Image courtesy of Guns and Gadgets Daily.

Does that make the ratings fake? No. Liberty says its own engineers have fire tested more than 300 safes over 15 years, measuring how much heat a safe takes before the inside passes 350°F. It does mean two makers may not have run the same test (one row says 1,200°F, the next 1,400°F).

Outside labs do this too. UL 72 is UL’s fire standard for record safes, and its Class 350 rating is meant to protect paper. Liberty’s own explainer says a lab label reads like “ETL Verified 60 Minutes at 1200°F” and usually sits inside the door. So open the door and read it, EVERY time.

What Is an RSC Gun Safe?

UL says residential security containers are “commonly known by many as gun safes” and are covered by UL 1037. The standard’s basic test gives one technician five minutes to open the door or make a 4-inch hole, with hammer heads no heavier than 3 pounds, tools no longer than 18 inches and drill bits up to 1/4 inch. Liberty notes the clock stops whenever the tools come off the safe.

Think about it: the guy who kicks in your back door is one person with a pry bar, not Danny Ocean with a crew and a floor plan, and that is exactly who the RSC test is built around. UL’s 2016 edition added Levels II and III (two technicians, 10 minutes, power tools). My advice for a hard target is simpler: buy the thickest steel you can afford and bolt it down.

California’s Gun Safe Standard

California put hard numbers on a gun safe. Penal Code § 23650 told the Attorney General to set a minimum standard to reduce firearm injuries to children 17 and younger, and the Department of Justice wrote the numbers into Title 11, § 4100 of its regulations.

A safe qualifies one of two ways. It can have 12-gauge walls (or two walls totaling 0.100 inch), a door of 7-gauge plate or two layers of 12-gauge, three or more 1/2-inch steel bolts, protected hinges and a lock with at least 10,000 combinations behind a hardened plate. Or it can carry a UL RSC listing from a nationally recognized testing lab, per the DOJ’s gun safe page.

One wrinkle: the state’s roster of approved firearm safety devices (Penal Code § 23655) is a separate list. And under Penal Code § 23635, proof that you own a safe meeting the standard (the original receipt works) lets you skip the safety device that otherwise comes with a dealer sale. Keep the receipt.

Locks and Biometric Safes

A lock comes down to two questions: how hard is it to beat, and what happens when the battery dies? (A dial has no battery, which is half its appeal.) Liberty says a UL Type 1 electronic lock keeps its batteries in the keypad outside the safe, which is where you want them on a dead-battery morning. Sargent & Greenleaf lists its UL Group 1 dials with a 20-hour manipulation resistance rating.

A fingerprint reader earns its keep beside the bed, which is why the best biometric gun safe for most people is a nightstand box. Vaultek’s DSE5i stores 20 prints and backs them up with a keypad and two keys. Our look at biometric gun safes, yea or nay, lays out both sides; the Hornady SnapSafe GlideVault is the slide-out drawer option, and for the truck there is the headrest safe.

How to Choose a Gun Safe Size

Remember, the number in the model name is a marketing count. Liberty’s sizing guide says to buy at least 20 to 30 percent more safe than you need, and with scoped rifles I would go further. Measure the doorway first, and know the weight: the USA 48 is 716 pounds, the Rhino Lightning 869.

In an apartment with one or two rifles, the 45-pound RS200i mounts to a wall or the floor, and a single-rifle locker like the ShotLock AR 200M Solo-Vault holds one AR.

Where to Put It and How to Bolt It Down

Browning’s owner’s manual is blunt: keep the safe as far from the garage as possible (flammable liquids, cars and small engines can start fires), and the best spot for fire protection is the basement against an outside wall, out of sight of windows.

On concrete, the manual calls for a 3/8-inch masonry bit and expansion anchors through the safe floor; on a wood joist floor, a 5/16-inch bit and lag bolts, through holes in the four corners. On carpet, slip clear plastic underneath to keep rust stains off the carpet, because the bottom can rust if the carpet holds moisture.

Humidity and Rust

The garage has a second problem: damp. Browning says air must circulate or condensation will rust your guns, recommends an electric dehumidifier if your average daily relative humidity is above 20 percent, and does not warrant moisture damage. Liberty’s humidity guide aims for about 35 to 50 percent inside and says to check a monitor daily for the first week.

Your ammo hates the same damp (see the best way to store your ammo), so a rod dehumidifier and a hygrometer are the first two things I would put in any new safe.

Safe Storage Laws

Storage laws vary by state, so here is how one reads. Florida Statutes § 790.174 says that if you leave a loaded firearm on property you control where you know, or should know, a minor under 16 is likely to get it without a parent’s permission or the supervision the law requires, you must keep it in a securely locked box or container, somewhere a reasonable person would believe secure, or under a trigger lock. That does not apply while the gun is on your body or close enough to grab and use as quickly as if it were.

Getting that wrong can be a second-degree misdemeanor if a minor then gets the gun and has it in public or shows it in a careless or threatening way (the statute spells out the exact conditions, and it exempts cases where the minor got it through an unlawful entry). Project ChildSafe, the NSSF’s safety program, calls secure storage “the #1 way to help prevent firearm accidents, thefts and misuse.”

Frequently Asked Questions

What is a good fire rating for a gun safe?

For a basement safe I want at least an hour at 1,200°F, more if it holds papers you cannot replace. Remember the fire hose: Browning’s manual says water compromises a safe’s fire insulation, and to get guns out quickly after a fire to clean and oil them.

What gauge steel should a gun safe be?

12 gauge or thicker for long guns, 14 if the job is keeping kids away from a few rifles, 16 for a bedside box. Check the door too: Browning builds the Yellowstone’s 1-inch door from multiple layers of steel, which no body gauge tells you.

Are biometric gun safes reliable?

They can be, if you set them up right. Fortress’s recall notice lists nine biometric models whose reader let unpaired fingerprints open the safe until a print was programmed. Enroll your prints the first day, test with a finger you did not enroll, and keep the backup key out of the safe.

How many guns fit in a 24-gun safe?

Fewer than 24 once scopes go on. Liberty’s pages say capacity “may vary depending upon size of guns and scopes,” and Browning counts 10 of the Yellowstone’s 40 on the door. Buy the bigger safe.

Should a gun safe be bolted down?

Yes, every one. Liberty says a bolted safe will not tip over by accident, and a thief cannot tip it over to pry it open or haul it off. Liberty sells a $14 kit for concrete or wood floors, and a renter can tether a bedside box with the cable Vaultek includes with the DSE5i.

My verdict: the best gun safe is 12-gauge steel one size bigger than you think, bolted to concrete, with a label inside the door you have read. And if your 24-gun safe ever holds 24 scoped rifles, send me a picture, because I would love to see it.
