Massad Ayoob: New Second Amendment Foundation President “In the Gravest Extreme”
Massad Ayoob, one of the greatest living firearms trainers and voices in defense of the Second Amendment, is the new president of the Second Amendment Foundation. Succeeding the late Joseph Tartaro, Ayoob brings a lifelong passion for the Right to Keep and Bear Arms to the prestigious position. As the author of one of the seminal works on self-defense, In the Gravest Extreme, Ayoob is assuming this responsibility at a time when the Second Amendment is in its own “gravest extreme.”
Ayoob brings a lifetime of achievement and recognition to the position. He has received judicial recognition as an expert witness for the courts in weapons and shooting cases since 1979, and served as a fully sworn part time police officer for 43 years, mostly at supervisor rank. Ayoob founded the Lethal Force Institute in 1981 and served as its director until 2009, and now trains through the Massad Ayoob Group.
He has appeared on CLE-TV delivering continuing legal education for attorneys, through the American Law Institute and American Bar Association, and has been retained to train attorneys to handle deadly force cases through the Armed Citizens Legal Defense Network. Ayoob served for two years as co-vice chair of the Forensic Evidence Committee of the National Association of Criminal Defense Lawyers. He also appeared in each episode of Personal Defense TV (Sportsman’s Channel).
“The election to president of SAF is one of the most cherished honors of my life,” Ayoob said. “I have been proud to serve for many years on SAF’s Board of Trustees and will do my best to continue my commitment to what I consider a civil right and indeed, a human right.
“I am humbled at the thought of replacing my long-time friend and mentor Joe Tartaro,” he continued, “and frankly doubt that anyone, myself included, can truly fill his shoes. I accepted the position only after being assured that it would be an interim appointment, and one of my primary goals is to find a dedicated 2A warrior with a longer life expectancy than my own to eventually serve in this position. In the meantime, I will support the goals of SAF, particularly to further strengthen our ties with the law enforcement community and to enhance the organization’s policy of embracing diversity in the community of the ‘gun culture.’”

There could be no finer leader in the field of firearms/personal defense and the legal community than Massad Ayoob, and I wholly concur with a previous Reply that the “gun culture” needs to unify around someone with gravitas and possessing the credentials of Massad Ayoob. Excellent choice!
I have read Mas since the 70’s and met him on several occasions in 90’s through ASLET. He is without peer as a Lethal Force Instructor for citizens and officers. He is also a “No BS” kind of gentleman and a fierce advocate of the 2nd Amendment. Best wishes and glad you are there!

With all of the Anti-American Terrorists out in our country, let’s hunt them down for cannon fodder!
I’ve been reading Ayoob for decades and have a copy of “In The Gravest Extreme” that is so old I should replace it because the pages are disintegrating. And “Stress Fire” is extremely useful especially the parts about recognizing adrenaline, its effects on the body., how to recognize and deal with them particularly if you have to produce a firearm in a defensive situation. He’s also part of the reason I have a lengthy subscription to American Handgunner.
One thing to remember is that his instruction and advice in both these books is never out of date.
He does keep us up-to-date on changing legal circumstances.
I get a copy of my state’s criminal code every year to keep current. You can usually get firearms and use of force laws online but it is nice to have in book form so it can be studied anywhere and you can show it to friends who think they know the law.
I’m Elated to see Mr. Ayoob at the helm.of SAF. Looking forward to his leadership.
Maybe now we will have the leadership that will organize us into a unified force to take our country back. Right now, gun owners are individual patriots looking for an organizer to lead us in the streets. All the gun rights organizations are like the disease organizations; they will lose their jobs if they cure the disease. We need leadership that wants to move on to something else after they fix the problem. I hope that this appointment will prove to be the start of a true leadership class that will get all gun owners and second amendment advocates unified in purpose and in the streets fighting back. We can’t do what is needed as individuals….this needs to be a team effort……but we need a leader.
This “disease” will never be cured. I’ve been involved in shooting since the mid 70’s., and the language has changed, but the goal is always the same. The anti gunners constantly evolve, and we must always be on guard.
I am proud of Massad for all of his accomplishments in, for, the personal firearms community. Myself an active member of the competitive shooting community though not well known have always given Massad my full attention to the many sessions he presented.
