Walk The Talk America: Firearms Companies Supporting Mental Health Initiatives
America’s gun owners and manufacturers can make the difference that “red flag” laws won’t.
Right now, as “red flag” laws are being debated across the nation, Walk The Talk America is offering an alternate solution to the question of firearms ownership and mental health. This new non-profit organization was founded by Michael Sodini, president of Eagle Imports, and they’re working to provide a sincere voice for leaders in the firearms industry to work with mental health service providers. Those service providers, as you may know, tend to struggle with finding the funding and resources to offer real assistance to everyone who needs mental health care. Walk The Talk America is striving to help solve this problem in a way that supports the mental health industry…without sacrificing any of our dearly held principles or rights as outlined by the Second Amendment.
According to Sodini, the main challenge so far is simply getting the word out to gun manufacturers and other Second Amendment organizations, since a great percentage of them choose to help once they understand Walk The Talk America’s mission. Walk The Talk America hopes to spread awareness by interacting with the media in positive and non-partisan ways, through social media and online activism, and through direct approaches describing their mission.
“The idea for Walk The Talk America came up when there was a horrific school shooting, which of course as someone who is President of a firearms-related company is not only something that is going to catch my eye, but inspire others to engage me in honest conversations about these issues from all political persuasions,” commented the quite passionate Sodini. “What was clear to me, after some thought, is you could almost break things down into two broad categories: those who blame firearms companies and supporters of the right to bear arms, and those who blame an underfunded (and less effective than it could be) mental health industry. Walk The Talk America is a way for these two different elements to work together for the common good of every American. We are a completely non-partisan non-profit effort and are happy to say we have been met with a quite positive response so far.”
Walk The Talk America calls for the firearms world, the mental health industry, and caring individuals to work together–not just for for more awareness and financial support of the best boots on the ground/grassroots trauma mitigation programs, but also for the destruction of the stigma that has been unfairly placed on mental health issues.
